“Elder abuse is a violation of human rights and a significant cause of illness, injury, loss of productivity, isolation, and despair.” The World Health Organization, www.ncea.aoa.gov.
In Florida, there are several statutory remedies for vulnerable seniors who have been subjected to abuse, neglect, or exploitation. Elder abuse is not limited to physical abuse, it includes mental and emotional abuse as well financial exploitation. The perpetrators of elder abuse can be caregivers, nursing homes, and even family members or spouses. Furthermore, some preliminary studies show a link between caregiver stress and incidents of elder abuse. Click here for an article on signs of caregiver stress.
If you have reasonable cause to believe a vulnerable adult is being abused, neglected, or exploited; it is mandatory under Florida law for you to report it to the Florida Department of Elder Affairs at 1-800-96-ABUSE.
